# Change Wi-Fi and reset

## Change Wi-Fi and keep your apps

Open the Wi-Fi recovery page from your display settings while your computer
still has internet. Keep that page open when changing networks.

1. With your Gen 1 powered on, release its rear button if held, then hold it
   for five seconds. Release it when the setup code appears. An ongoing network
   operation can delay the setup screen. Short presses do nothing.
2. Join `NIBLET-SETUP-xxxx`, using the eight-digit code as the Wi-Fi password.
   Stay connected even if your computer reports no internet.
3. Return to the recovery page and allow local-network access. Select
   **Check display**, then enter its code and your new 2.4 GHz network details.
4. Watch the display. An accepted request is not yet a successful connection.
   If the code returns, rejoin the setup network and check/retry. When connected,
   return your computer to its usual Wi-Fi and check the dashboard.

Your installed apps, account connection, schedules, brightness and saved content
remain. Credentials pass directly from the browser to your display, never to
Cloud or browser storage. The old network is retained until a new one connects
and saves. An internet or Cloud outage does not undo a saved Wi-Fi change.

An online display can receive **Open Wi-Fi setup on display** from its owner,
after confirmation. An offline display cannot receive that command and needs
physical recovery. The temporary session expires after 15 minutes; you can
also cancel it with the displayed code. Both keep the saved network.

## Full local reset

A five-second button hold only opens recovery. It never wipes your display.

To erase local customer data, open recovery with the Gen 1 rear button, join
its setup network, select **Check display**, enter the current display code,
and type `RESET` under **Full local reset**. Select **Erase local data**.
Keep power connected until a new setup code appears. A remotely opened Wi-Fi
session does not permit reset. If a firmware update is still awaiting
confirmation, let it finish before resetting.

Reset removes saved Wi-Fi, the Cloud credential, local settings and cached apps
and images. It keeps Niblet firmware installed. If interrupted after acceptance,
erasure resumes when the display restarts. This is a customer-data reset, not a
promise of forensic flash sanitization.

## Removing a display from your account

**Remove display** in the dashboard deletes the Cloud display and its app
configuration and revokes its Cloud access. It does not erase data from the
physical device. Full local reset does not delete the Cloud record.

Before giving the display away, remove it from your account and complete the
physical local reset. If you reset while offline first, remove the old Cloud
record when internet returns. New setup creates a new display; old app
configuration is not automatically restored.

## Older firmware and Gen 2

Gen 2 rear-button recovery is not part of this implementation. Devices that
cannot run this recovery flow need the model-specific
[USB recovery instructions](/getting-started/migrate-gen1). First-install
flashing erases local data and is separate from changing Wi-Fi.
